Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Do you or someone you know snore?  Snoring is sometimes one of the many signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.  Obstructive Sleep Apnea is an illness in which the soft tissues at the back of the throat completely close off the airway so that air cannot flow into the lungs.  The brain then alerts the muscles in the airway to tighten up and unblock the passage.  This is when sleep is disrupted and a loud gasp or snore is heard and then breathing begins again, most times along with snoring.  Other symptoms of Sleep Apnea are significant daytime sleepiness, periodic stoppages of breathing, restless sleep, difficulty concentrating, poor memory, irritability and personality change.  There are a few different treatment options for patients with Sleep Apnea, which are; CPAP, Oral Appliance, and Palatal or Telgnathic (jaw) surgery.

Oral Appliances

Dr. Anahita Abdehou specializes in Oral Appliances for Sleep Apnea and is a board certified diplomate with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Oral Apliances are small acrylic devices that fit over the upper and lower teeth or tongue and are similar to an orthodontic retainer or mouth guard.  The appliance slightly moves the lower jaw or tongue forward, which opens the airway and improves breathing.  Dr. Anahita Abdehou fabricates and customizes the appliance for each specific patient.  Oral Appliances have several advantages in comparison to other forms of treatment.  Oral Appliances are comfortable and easy to wear, they are small and convenient to carry when traveling, and treatment with Oral Appliances is reversible and non-invasive.  Currently there are more than 100 different Oral Appliances available, come in and see which is the best option for you today!
